Close Encounters of the Pug Kind

The weather in Brooklyn has been gorgeous lately, so the other day our friend Rob, a professional photographer, came along on Sid’s afternoon walk to stretch his legs, soak in the sunshine, and snap a few photos of the most adorable pug in Brooklyn. Rob took all the photos for today’s post. He’s obviously gifted when it comes to shooting photos of surly pugs, but his normal models are typically more…human. Check out more of his work here: www.robgullixson.com.

We had a nice photo session and Rob got some great shots of Sid among all the blooming flora. As we were leaving the park, though, we encountered something on the sidewalk that made Sid stop dead in his tracks.

Sid was confused. He thought he must have walked into a carnival and was staring into one of those funhouse mirrors. Across from him was a tiny smooshed version of himself!

He tiptoed in to get a closer look and sniff this reflection. He quickly discovered this wasn’t an optical illusion. This thing smelled like a pug, looked like a pug, and breathed loudly like a pug… It must be a pug!

Sid was baffled that something so cute and tiny could exist. We were, too. When Sid entered our lives he was already 4 years old, so we missed out on the puppy stage. We’ve never seen one this tiny in person.

His name is Winston. Sid was trying to sniff a little more but Winston was an excitable little fellow and was skittering all over the place. Pretty soon he was zipping away down the block.

When we got home, Sid felt a little worried we might “upgrade” to a younger model Pug, like Winston, and started googling phrases like “pug botox” and “nose-flap rejuvenation.” We gave him a big hug, disconnected the Internet, and told him not to fret because he’ll always be the cutest pug in our book!

(Thank you, Rob, for taking such great photos!)

Just Keepin’ an Eye on the Tupperware

As you’re all probably aware by now, Sid has a weakness, no – an obsession – with Tupperware. The other day he was just hanging out, “minding his own business” right next to the bookcase that houses all of said Tupperware. I know he was really casing the area for his next big score.

A thin plastic lid makes him weak in the knees. What a doofus.

Composting Pug

When we first told Sid we were going to stop putting our food scraps into the garbage can, he got really excited. This didn’t last long, though, as we explained further that we meant that we were going to be composting our food scraps (not dumping them into his food bowl as he had hoped).

There’s a quaint community garden on the south side of Park Slope called the 6/15 Green. The name is actually just the intersection where it’s located – 6th Ave and 15th Street. I have been dropping off our compostables here for the last few months during their open hours, but I recently became a full-fledged “Compost Member”. This is helpful because it means I now have keys so I can drop off the compost whenever I want in exchange for serving for some of the garden’s open hours and doing one compost turning. They also have a “Garden Member” option if you eventually want to garden in one of the plots. The best way to find out more about joining the garden is to attend one of the monthly meetings.

This was Sid’s first time to the garden and he wanted to say one last goodbye to those oh so delicious chunks of rotting veggies.

He also enjoyed the smell of the compost, though we didn’t want to let him get too close for fear that we might never be able to pry him away from the bins. Also, while dogs can hang out in the front sitting area of the garden they aren’t allowed on-foot in the main section & compost areas. (I think Sid may start a petition to change that rule. 😀 )

Besides the composting area, the garden is also just a very relaxing place to hang out. When the gates are open, anyone can stop in, so if you’re in the neighborhood, stop on by.

This is a good time of year to go as the gardeners are all busy working on their plots, flowers are blooming everywhere, and lots of plants / veggies are starting to fill in. The garden also hosts different community events throughout the year. The Spring Festival is Saturday, May 7th, and there will be live music, activities, and lots of plants for sale.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

(Just in case you were wondering, those are apple slices on the counter…one of Sid’s favorite treats.)

Strategy

Sid has finally outsmarted us: “If I don’t let them have my collar, then they can’t put it on me, which means I’ll never have to go for a walk again!”

Well played, Sid. Well played.

Sid Comics

Sid bolting down the street - side view

I recently enrolled in a continuing education class at the School for Visual Arts called “Cartooning Basics” to brush up on my drawing skills. I used to draw a lot more when I was a teenager but hadn’t really kept up with it. Lately I got the urge to get back into it and thought a class would be good motivation.

Since Sid has a very expressive face and is always apt to do things in a comical fashion, I thought he’d be a good subject. Here’s a couple frames of him dragging me behind him as he rushes home after successfully completing his “business”.

Look forward to more drawings and little comic strips starring your favorite Park Slope pug.

Under Cover

Sid Under Cover

Sid’s never been a secret agent, but he’s definitely gone under cover. The frigid cold of an East Coast February combined with continually seeking out methods to make us go “awwww” has prompted Sid’s journey into this uncharted territory.

It started out as a little half-hour cuddle time before we’d go to sleep, at which time he was then (reluctantly) placed into his own bed – the ela-bed. But, as evidenced by the photo – shot during daylight hours – it has gone well beyond that. Well, I can’t actually put all the blame on Sid, since it was me that put him under the covers. Though, you have to admit, the little dude does seem quite at home there.
